The Texas Farm Bureau Friends of Agriculture Fund (AGFUND), Inc. has endorsed Democrat Shane Sklar, a fourth generation rancher from Edna, in his race to unseat Republican Congressman Ron Paul. "The farm and ranch leaders of the County Farm Bureaus in Congressional District 14 have overwhelmingly recommended the endorsement of Shane Sklar," said Kenneth Dierschke, president of AGFUND and Texas Farm Bureau. "Currently, there are no active farmers and ranchers in the Texas Congressional Delegation. When Shane goes to Washington, he'll take along a great understanding of agricultural issues." Dierschke said Sklar also has a broad understanding of the problems facing District 14 and all of Texas. "His willingness to tackle tough problems with innovative solutions will be a positive," Dierschke said. Sklar describes himself as a conservative Democrat and he is well known in the Texas beef cattle industry. He worked for Texas cattle producers and understands small town values. For the last four years, Sklar has served as the executive director of the Independent Cattlemen's Association of Texas (ICA). Prior to joining ICA, Sklar served on the staff of Congressman Chet Edwards, who represents another Central Texas district. As Edwards' field representative, Sklar traveled throughout the district, meeting with constituents on issues and representing Edwards at district events. He also served as field director for Edwards' successful re-election campaign in 2000. Sklar is a graduate of Sam Houston State University. He is a member of Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. Sklar is married to Jill Turner of Anahuac, who formerly worked on the Texas Farm Bureau legislative staff in Austin. AGFUND is Texas Farm Bureau's Political Action Fund. It is a legal entity separate from the Texas Farm Bureau and may endorse and contribute financially to political candidates. AGFUND is funded only by voluntary contributions from TFB members. |
