Food Check-Out Day

Food Check-Out

We partnered with the local Dairy Queen and sold sausage biscuits for a reduced price. Both radio and newspaper advertisements promoted the Farmers’ Share breakfast. The response was remarkable. Board members, the agency manager and field representative worked the breakfast in shifts to hand out brochures and discuss Food Check-Out Week with attendees. Also, a membership drive was held during the event. Board members discussed the purpose of Farm Bureau, the need to promote agriculture and the effects Farm Bureau has on policies at local, state and national levels. The Dairy Queen staff was very efficient and diligent in the efforts to distribute 651 sausage biscuits to customers, even when the customers arrived prior to the sale and when a traffic jam was created out into the highway. A reporter from the local newspaper covered the event with anticipation of the event surpassing last year’s number of sausage biscuits sold. Haskell CFB's only expense was for advertising the event.

Feeding the Homeless

TFB State Director Larry Pratt and several District 3 YF&R members recently volunteered at the Faith Mission in Wichita Falls to serve lunches to the homeless and needy. Before feeding roughly 50 people, Pratt also led a small worship service. The Mission is Christian-based and operates solely on donations from the Wichita Falls area. The YF&R members involved were from Baylor, Knox, Haskell, Young and Throckmorton counties. Russell Walker, the District 3 YF&R chair, organized the event.

Town Hall Meeting

On April 7, 2009, Haskell County Farm Bureau directors met with U.S. Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-13th District of Texas) at a town hall meeting in Wichita Falls to discuss your concern with the proposed changes to the Farm Bill.  Pictured (l-r) are Charles Gibson, HCFB president; Jeff Teague, Steve McGuire, Joe Wheatly, Rep. Mac Thornberry, Shane Stout, and Johnny Josselet. Thornberry said that he doesn’t really see the Farm Bill being opened back up since it was so difficult to pass in the first place.  Gross income may be changed to “means testing” in regard to direct payments, and most likely, all entitlements will be affected in the same way.  In further discussion, Thornberry expressed his feelings on fossil fuels and ethanol subsidy.  As your “Voice of Agriculture,” Haskell County Farm Bureau strives to keep our representatives informed about your concerns in this county. If you have any concerns that you would like to convey to our current leadership, please contact one of our directors. They would be happy to meet with you.
