The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced additional food safety procedures to prevent contaminated food from entering the U.S. food supply and causing foodborne illness. The three major procedural additions will trace contaminated food materials and act sooner when contamination is found.
“The additional safeguards we are announcing today will improve our ability to prevent foodborne illness by strengthening our food safety infrastructure,” said USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Elisabeth Hagen. “Together, these measures will provide us with more tools to protect our food supply, resulting in stronger public health protections for consumers.”
The USDA’s food safety procedures include: new trace-back measures, requirements for recall procedures and guidance to plants for the validation process.
