Beef Products Inc. (BPI), manufacturer of lean finely textured beef, has announced it will permanently close three plants, including the Amarillo plant in Texas. The plant closings will result in 650 job losses with the closing of plants in Amarillo, Garden City, Kan. and Waterloo, Iowa.
BPI temporarily closed the three plants after the media strongly criticized lean finely textured beef, dubbing it “pink slime.”
A company spokesman said that the company “attempted to rebuild markets following the unfounded and misguided attacks,” in an email reported by Bloomberg. “While we had hoped to be able to resume operations at those plants, that is not going to be possible,” Rich Jochum continued.
The three plants, including the Amarillo plant, will close permanently on May 25.
