Rolling Plains summer crops field day, July 17


Rolling Plains farmers are invited to participate in Texas AgriLife’s Summer Crops Field Day July 17 at the Texas AgriLife Research Station, 1340 FM 392 in Chillicothe. The program, “Maximizing Nutrient and Water-Use Efficiencies,” will begin with registration at 7:45 a.m.
 
Program topics and speakers include:

•         Availability of well water and soil nitrate for crop uptake, Dr. Paul DeLaune, Texas AgriLife Research environmental soil scientist at Vernon; and Dr. Srinivasulu Ale, geospatial hydrologist;
•         Irrigation scheduling technologies, Dr. Nithya Rajan, agronomist;
•         Five years of no-till, what have we learned?, DeLaune, Rajan and Dr. Seong Park, economist;
•         Cover crops in dryland cotton, DeLaune;
•         Optimizing fertilizer application to maximize profits, Daren Harmel, research leader, USDA Agriculture Research Service; and
•         Soil health, strategies, functions soils can provide, Willie Durham, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service state conservationist agronomist.
 
The Summer Crops Field Day is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided. Three continuing education units also will be offered through the Texas Department of Agriculture. For more information, contact DeLaune at (940) 552-9941 or
