While other southern states have been battling weed resistance in their cotton fields for a number of years, the Lone Star State has been relatively unscathed until now.
Dr. Paul Baumann of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service reported at the Beltwide Cotton Production Conference Tuesday in San Antonio that over the past few years, the number of suspected sites of common waterhemp has increased.
According to AgWired, the resistance issue is mainly in south Texas; however, weed resistance is becoming a growing problem in the plains. Baumann notes that scientists have confirmed a large number of sites with resistant Palmer Ameranth Pigweed, which can be an issue for the cotton-producing area.
An interview with Dr. Baumann about the weed resistance can be heard online at AgWired.com.
