The U.S. Department of Agriculture is now accepting comments from the public on proposed changes to nutrition standards for food sold in public schools.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires the USDA to establish nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools. The proposed “Smart Snacks in School” rule is the first step in the process to create national standards. The rule will soon be published in the Federal Register. The proposal encourages promoting the availability of foods with whole grains, low fat dairy foods, fruits, vegetables or protein foods. It will work to ensure that snack foods are lower in fat, sugar and sodium, are of the proper portion size and caffeine content and are flexible for state and local communities.
The text of the proposed rule can be found at http://www.fns.usda.gov/cga/020113-snacks.pdf. The public comment period for the proposed rule will be open for 60 days.
