Report: Texas cattle numbers down in 2012

The prolonged drought has taken a toll on Texas cattle herds, according to a new report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Texas, the nation’s largest cattle producer, saw a five percent reduction in its cattle herds in 2012.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the multi-year drought has shrunk the entire nation’s herd size to the smallest it’s been in six decades.

The U.S. inventory of cattle and calves was estimated at 89.3 million Jan. 1–a decrease of two-percent, or 1.5 million cattle, from one year ago.
